Retelling Story by Using Pictures

It is one of interesting method in teaching English. As we know that story is one of English materials which attract students to learn English especially English as a foreign language. Story retelling provides an opportunity to analyze stories and build oral language as they acquire related vocabulary (Schienkman, 2004) This learning will be more interesting and fun if the teacher chooses a suitable method and material too. One of the methods is by retelling story using some pictures.

The first steps is start with building knowledge of the field by asking them about the narrative text they like. Then, lesson begins with a shared reading lesson. A text is introduced and children are encouraged before, during and after the reading to participate in a discussion about the book highlighting their favorite parts, telling about another story or experience the story reminded them of or asking questions they may have.  After I model retelling for a few pages, children take turns as well.  Before turning the page, I always ask if there is anything else we can say about a page in order to ensure participation by all and a thorough retelling.

The next steps, I divide them into small group discussion. They are in a group of four or five. I give them a passage of narrative text. I choose one of Indonesian legends, Mount Bromo. They must read and understand the story before answering some questions. Then we discuss together about the story and the questions. Then, I demand to return the story back. I change the passage with the jumbled picture which describes the story. Each group must rearrange the picture into correct order based on the story that they read.

After rearranging the picture, students must attach the picture into wide colored paper based on the correct order of the story. Next, they must rewrite the story for each picture. So, they rewrites the story by their own words. In the final cycle, each students must retell the story alternately in their own group. Finally I choose the best performance to retell the story in front of the class. Don’t forget. Give him/her a reward.

Some benefits of this method are:

  1. Students become active
  2. Class becomes dynamic and productive
  3. Students get some experiences
  4. Students desire to compete
  5. Students enjoy their learning by working together
  6. Students get some new vocabularies

What did my students say about this learning? They said:” English is fun....yes....
